Factors To Consider Before Renting Storage

by: admin Friday, May 1st, 2009

Almost all of us need rental storage at some point in time or other. It could be for a short period while we found our new house and sometimes longer for things we could no longer accommodate. But depending on your need, there are various things to consider before signing the contract with the storing company.  Read our quick tips that will help you understand your own requirements better and choose the best warehouse solution for your needs.

1. Amount of cargo space needed – Many of us have a hoarder instinct. We do not want to give away our children baby clothes, souvenirs from various romantic trips and a host of other non utilitarian items that we have no space for. As long as our home could accommodate them, keeping them was still okay. But when you have to pay for it, it is a good idea to think hard about what you really need to keep and not just send everything to the rental.

2. Period for which storeroom facilities is required
– If you have a temporary need as against a long term requirement, you could consider creating some space in your own home. Sometimes, the transactional cost of locating a vendor, packing, transporting and then getting it all back is simply not worth it. Not to mention the real cost of the space you hire.

3. Reason for storing – The two common reasons for needing rental storage is shifting and space constraints. The kind of facility you choose should take into account the reason for storing.  Moreover, if you are shifting, identify which location you would prefer – Near the previous home or near the new place. There are some decisions that you need to take before you start short listing vendors.

4. Containers, packing and transportation services
- Getting right sized containers or even packaging services are optional extras that you can opt for. If you do the packaging yourself, the risk for breakage or damages, rests with you. Also over sized boxes can end up saving you container money but cost you more in space. Also check if transportation will be free or charged extra as that can also add a substantial amount to your total rental bill.

5. What is being stored – Items like electronics or art pieces are heat sensitive. Even for storing furniture, one needs to ensure that the environment is humidity free. Choose a facility that has climate controlled storing so that your valuables stay valuable and useable. This is of course applicable depending on what you are storing.

6. Access Requirements – Many items that are stored are seasonal such as, winter clothing. Others require regular access. It is important to ensure that you pack regular items in color coded boxes in an easy to reach location. Also the rental location should be at a convenient location. Check if there are specific hours during which the facility is closed. Some cargo space facilities are open round the clock.

7. Insurance – Despite the best care that you might take, there is always a chance that something may get damaged. Check the insurance clause in your agreement with the vendor to make sure that you are adequately compensated in case of any mishap.

8. Security - While on the subject of mishaps, you must also ensure round the clock security and safety from fire and floods in the warehousing area. Agencies that outsource security staff have a higher chance of security breach than those who hire them on their rolls.

Consider these points and you will be able to understand your own needs better. You can look for an agency offering rentals that provides the most cost effective solution.
