The service industry is a vulnerable industry as it has to deal with the moods of the customers rather than their requirements. It is also the case for the self storage businesses that interact with many customers directly on any particular day. So any retail shop is as vulnerable as any restaurant as far as the customer whims go. So they need a good way to measure the level of customer satisfaction and for this they regularly carry out surveys designed at judging the various parameters. Mystery shopping programs are part of this list of surveys and the methods used by these are quite different from the other surveys carried out by the company.

Mystery shopping programs are conducted by companies dealing with this special type of survey. Here the survey is not made of the customer feedback but the situation prevailing in the establishment including the appeal and staff behavior. The tool of such a survey is the special shopper and the report prepared by them. This shopper is unique in nature. The shopper is paid by the company to shop. But this is just a pretension and the real job of this person is observation of the establishment. The shopper is needed to hide his own identity as well as the intention. The pose of any regular shopper is to deceive the staff and catch them at their natural self. This is like an internal assessment to see whether the company is at any fault of its own or it is just that the customers are demanding more.

The business world is a competitive world and this is truer at this moment when many companies are struggling for survival. So any slip on their part can result in disaster and this is what they are worried about. The mystery shopping programs help to find out these faults if any and also whether the company is not doing something that another successful company is doing. The reliance of the companies on this method has become so much that though the number of companies are dwindling the companies that are providing them the special shopping is on the rise.

Mystery shopping programs are generally tailor made as the need varies from company to company. Some companies need to monitor themselves while some companies try to spy on others to see their work procedure. Again a company may need to know how its franchises are functioning while in other cases the matter may be restricted to just one establishment. Whatever may be the case the basic procedure is to sit down with the company people and give them a patient hearing on what is their ailment and what do they want in the end. Then the programs are designed accordingly.

The final procedure in the mystery shopping programs includes the actual inspection of the establishment by the process of special shopping and generating the report. A team of experts analyze the report for any mistakes and then hand it over to the company for its perusal. The company then takes its own action. But sometimes the special shopping agencies also double up as consultation firms and provide solutions to the problems that have been detected by the special shopping program. In the end it has been found that the frenzy of employing special shopping agencies is not because every establishment is employing them, but because on every occasion they are proving to be profitable in the long run.
